Our school

History of our school

In the 2008-2009 academic year we celebrated our 50th anniversary. But let's do a little history. There was a time when classes were taught wherever possible, and in Lakuntza there were two schools, one for boys in the room behind the church that we know today as Biltoki, and another for girls on the second floor of the Town Hall, where there also was a teachers' house.

Around 1952, both, girls and boys came to study at the place where we are nowadays. At the beginning it was a ground floor school, with a central door and a class on each side, separated by gender. That situation did not last long because in 1958 it was renovated according to a National School Plan, as indicated by a plaque that is still on the side wall of the school. It was then, when a plant was built and the school acquired its current form. After 20 years, a remodeling had to be done and classes were added in the space between the school and the Court. That year a second floor was added and the school adopted its current appearance.

In 1981 the school moved to the D model. The children started that year were studying in Basque year after year, and their older ones extinguished the previous model in Spanish.

Time went on and the number of boys and girls in the village and in the school increased.  In the 2008 summer some works were carried out to overcome the architectural barriers and have a sufficient number of classrooms. That time it was also created the canteen and the lunch service.

Some years ago, our school was called the Luis Fuentes public school because it was on the same name street. Later, the street was renamed Abarrategi, but the school continued with the name in honor of the businessman who set up the first factory in Lakuntza. In the 2017-18 academic year its official name became Lakuntzako Herri Eskola, forming an association together with other Public Schools in Sakana.
